Reiki Healing

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy healing practice rooted in the Japanese tradition of channeling universal life force energy. The word itself means 'universal life energy' — rei (universal) and ki (life force).

During a session, healing energy is directed through the practitioner's hands to support the body's natural ability to restore balance on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels.

Reiki is safe, gentle, and deeply relaxing. It works beautifully alongside conventional medicine and other wellness practices.

The History of Reiki

Origins in Japan

Reiki was developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk and spiritual teacher. After years of study and meditation, Usui underwent a profound spiritual experience on Mount Kurama in 1922 — a 21-day retreat of fasting, meditation, and prayer. During this time, he reported receiving the gift of healing energy and the ability to channel it through his hands. He called this practice Reiki, combining the Japanese words rei (universal or spiritual) and ki (life energy or vital force).

The Usui System

Usui established the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (Usui Reiki Healing Society) in Tokyo in 1922, where he taught and practiced his healing method. He developed a system of training with distinct levels — from beginner to master — and created the five Reiki principles as a guide for living a balanced, mindful life: Just for today, do not anger. Just for today, do not worry. Be grateful. Work diligently. Be kind to others. These principles remain central to Reiki practice worldwide.

Coming to the West

One of Usui's students, Chujiro Hayashi, further developed the practice and opened a Reiki clinic in Tokyo. Hayashi trained Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman from Hawaii, who became instrumental in bringing Reiki to the Western world. After returning to Hawaii in the late 1930s, Takata spent decades teaching and practicing Reiki across North America. She trained 22 Reiki Masters before her passing in 1980, and it is largely through her lineage that Reiki spread throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Reiki Today

Today, Reiki is practiced in over 100 countries and is recognized by many hospitals and healthcare institutions as a complementary therapy. It is used alongside conventional medicine to support relaxation, reduce stress, and promote overall well-being. While styles and lineages have evolved over the decades, the heart of Reiki remains the same: a gentle, non-invasive practice of channeling universal life energy to support the body's natural capacity to heal.
